lyrics
“Red Snow” tells the story about nine young men who died at the infamous Dyatlov Pass (also known like a "Dyatlov Pass incident"). Reasons of their deaths vary with each opinion — some say it was due to the attack by the native peoples of the North Ural (Khanty and Mansi), some believe its reasons to be of much deeper and conspiratorial nature.
—The track contains several rearranged traditional songs from Khanty and Mansi people. The most distinctive one is called “Kukushka” (Cuckoo) and can be easily heard at the end part of the song.
—We also added some samples which should help to create a better image of Dyatlov Pass incident: we included shamanic tambourine, woman voice singing in Khanty language, drunken young men vocalizing, and the scrunching sound of the footsteps approaching the tents.
—The cover represents musicians’ own fantastic version of the incident: the character on the foreground is a Red Army soldier with his blood turned into glass because of cold, which is nothing but a direct allusion to John Carpenter’s “The Thing” (1982). The background shows the well-known Manpupuner weathering pillars, located some 70 kilometers (43,5 miles) away from the where of an accident.
A truly stellar death/doom album with heavy doses of black metal. Tracks like Isolation, Child of Light, and Broken Hymns deliver the sorrowful and icy tone of this album, elevated by the stirring cello compositions of Raphael Weinroth-Browne. The album delivers a deeply satisfying crescendo in Becoming Intangible before stirring the soul once again with Epilogue. Matt Richardson
Gaerea's first release of "Unsettling Whispers" was in 2018, and since, they dared define a "black metal" niche of their own, they dared to walk a new path and stir shit up a bit in the realm of BM, this album is a masterpiece and a milestone proving that it can be done, provided the band can pull it off, and they did, oh they did! Gloomy, dark, post-BM sludgy whatever, it's Gaerea, and this one belongs in my BC collection, the end. sachavonkarl74
The first 30 seconds of "Revenge by Fire" convinced me to get the whole album! It is a face-melting blend of speed and black metal, reminiscent of Hellripper! KVAEN is a Swedish solo project much like Hellripper but many known guest musicians helped J. Björnfot in his endeavor. Altogether it is really a solid debut album, I loved the melodies and the pace changes in the second half too, ending with a "calm" instrumental one. Well-done!! sachavonkarl74
To me this is DSBM at it's best. calming, emotion filled riffs, vocals are a perfect blend between heart wrenching and eerie, and last but not least, the ATMOSPHERE. One of my absolute favorites for this sub genre The Laughing Stock
