lyrics

Perhaps, the only fabulous song from the album Legacy, where very close thins to folk epos were thematically disclosed. The music was written a long time ago, main guitar riff that you can hear was written almost 20 years ago, when I learned about the tale about Yag Mort – possibly, already at that time these things were already connected. As the most of kids, who grew up in the late 90-s and didn’t want that much to join the herd of aborigines, who were going to gather on bench with bottles of vodka 20 years later, there was not much of a good things outside of home walls in my childhood. Nevertheless, there were much interesting at home. Numerous literature. For the lyrics writing I was inspired by fairy-tale about the princess of Komi nation, Raida, which deeply amazed me in young age. To be correct, the story tells about the evil sorcerer-cannibal Yag Mort, who kidnapped the princess, and it’s called not Raida, but “Yag Mort”.

For some reason, from all the fabulous literature which we had at home, the most memorable for me were the two of them – French fairy-tale about cannibals, the story I can barely remember, despite the huge amount of arts, which also stuck in my mind from “Yag Mort”. This later will become the song “Raida”. The song repeats the tale’s cycle, but in a shorter way. For example, instead of a short line about Chud (Finno-Ugric people of north – the song is closely connected with ideological concept of Second To Sun), you can read this:

“In the cave depths Chud founded many different loot, piled it together and burned. Moreover, the scary den of Yag Mort they dug in, scattered with rocks, laid with logs. Afterwards, they led their captive to the place where he was captured for the first time, decapitated him, scored his spine with aspen stake, and buried the corpse in the ground, where now is the hill, called by people the grave of Yag Mort.”

Miraculous tale with wonderful content, isn’t it? Same as Mastorava and Kalevala, this is a very powerful literary work, despite the word “fairy-tale” (in some version “legend”, which is more truthfully), describing it. Still it seems to me that Finno-Ugric tales are pithy and live – there are no heroic victor, there are imps, horror, life, fate, and these terms are very close to reality, and that is what making them even closer to Turkish and Scandinavian folklore. Already at that time, I noted that Ivan-The-Fool, who lies on the furnace, is not a good character to idolize, and he doesn’t match with my nature. Maybe that’s the reason I categorically do not accept folk-metal.

Extremely impressing and inspirational for the creation process of “Raida” was mythical poetry of the North in epos of Kallistrat Zhakov “Bjarmaland”, which first part tells about the travelling of Djedjim-Parma oxy prince Yaur to Bjarmaland and his marriage with bjarmian (almost Komi) princess Raida. Later, Raida also has been kidnapped.

However, childhood impressions from fairy-tale were much more powerful and overpowered this literary work, despite his content and volume – Zhakov was from Komi-Zyrian family and knew some things about Finnish legends from his family. Alas, his concept seemed to me too difficult for using in short song of six minutes, that’s why I stopped on legend. I made some additions in lyrics from Komi poetry, to make the song even more authentic.

Talking about the music, it’s difficult for me to say what impacted the song mostly. I suppose, Metal Hammer Black Metal compilation, which I’ve been imbued by at that time. But the chorus riff is definitely inspired by Pantera.

To lay down a song I want now,
To wake up the sleeper,
Make his nature to rise;
To make your heart tremble.

Imagine the tale: the princess and daughter,
Beautiful Raida disappeared
Day passes, night passes
No village, no forest - no one can find her

Throw a cry for all the tribes
Bad news came up faster:
The Princess is kidnapped by the wizard-witch
In his own palace he's hiding Raida

Freaks band together, absorbed all the might
Calling the wizard to answer
Villain collapsed, from the pile of bones
The princess alive showed herself

Snowstorms again will cover taiga
Over the forest the star shining brightly

Ныне песню хочу сложить,
Чтобы спящий проснулся,
Чтобы воспрянул всем существом;
